Age
spots, otherwise known as liver spots, sun spots or solar lentigines,
are natural blemishes on the skin of a brown, flat discoloration nature
(see age spots diagram to your left) and are the result of exposure to
sun rays. These harmless blemishes can be found on the face (as shown),
on the backs of hands or on the back of the neck in people over 40 years
of age.
Age Spots Causes
Age spots are caused by exposure to the sun and become
common in people over the age of 40. However sun spots are known to occur
in some adults in their 20s due to excessive and significant sun exposure.
Sun spots have been likened to "sun induced freckles" and are
natural lesions, resulting from the sun's powerful ultraviolet rays which
in time will penetrate the skin, darken pigments of it and form sun spots.
Are Age Spots Harmful?
Sun spots are completely harmless and natural. They
are benign and won't go on to form any kind of skin cancer. Note: If you
are concerned about any suspicious blemish, spot or mark on your skin, you
must seek professional medical advice.
Preventing Age Spots
You can't really prevent age spots from occurring
as in time, they will develop in most adults as a natural process. However
you can keep them at bay so to speak by using sun block and restricting
your exposure to the sun. The less time you spend exposed to the sun and
it's powerful rays, the less chance of developing sun spots early.
Age Spots Treatment
You can treat age spots by using skin bleaching creams,
acid peels, or by restricting your exposure to the sun. You can also 'laser
out' or 'freeze' sun spots with medical procedures.More
